If you prefer to have a more active vacation, you’ll find Costa Rica has activities to keep you busy from arrival to departure.

Getting There

You can either fly into the capital city San Jose or fly into Liberia which is located on the Pacific side of the country. More and more airlines are adding flights to Costa Rica so, from the east coast it may be possible to get there in about 4 hours.

Accommodations

There are plenty of hotels to choose from throughout the country. The important thing to decide is whether or not to opt for an all-inclusive hotel. All-inclusive means you’re your meals are included. This is a great choice for those that are looking to lounge by the pool and beach and are not too interested in venturing out to other areas of the country.

However, if you feel you may want take some overnight excursions and really soak up the culture this is probably not a good option.

When to Go

As Costa Rica is located only 8 degrees north of the equator, the climate is tropical year round. The country only has 2 climates: the dry season (December to April) and the wet season (May to November). Expect high humidity no matter when you visit. And, although the wet season would suggest a lot of rain, it does not last long with only 1 or 2 short showers daily and sunshine the rest of the day. If you don’t mind putting up with a little rain you can save money as it is much cheaper to visit during the off season.

Canopy Tours

Explore the flora and fauna from a bird’s eye view. Developed by scientists who wanted to study the forest wildlife without disturbing it, they are metal platforms connected by zip lines. You are sent flying across the rainforest for a unique vantage point. It is a great experience but definitely not for the faint of heart.

Monteverde Cloud Forest

A 4 hour drive from San Jose, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is home to more than 2,000 species of plants, 400 species of birds, and 100 different species of mammals. Monteverde is fun, energetic place made up of several small villages. All types of lodging can be found here to suit any budget.

Arenal Volcano

Not to far from the Monteverde Cloud Forest is the Arenal (say are-a-nal) Volcano. Although an active volcano, eruptions are fairly mild and can be viewed without any harm. The best views are at night as the lava has a glowing effect.

La Fortuna Waterfall

Near Arenal Volcano, it is worth it especially if you are visiting Arenal but be warned this is a long, long hike to bottom. It is pretty steep but the view at the bottom is not to be missed.

Golfing

Cost Rica is a golf lovers dream. No matter which side of the country you stay on, there’s a golf course not far away. If you are a real enthusiast, you can play a different course everyday for a week! The courses in Costa Rica allow for great use of natural landscape and beautiful views of nature.

Whether your passion is leisure or adventure, or a mix of both, you’ll find it all in Costa Rica.
