Costa Rica is considered to be the gem of Central America, and the town of Playa Tamarindo has recently become a favorite for a variety of travelers.

Tamarindo Travel

Located on the Pacific Coast, a 5-hour driving distance from San Jose, lies an area known as Playa Tamarindo, or Tamarindo Beach. The town is small and dense- with hotels and restaurants on every corner. It is difficult to navigate at first, but after three days of walking and exploring, the layout of the town becomes simple.

Tamarindo Hotels

There are hotel accommodations ranging in price and location. The Tamarindo Diria is located on the beach and is considerably more expensive than Pasatiempo- located 5 minutes from the beach (walking distance). The Witch’s Rock Surf Camp offers cheap rooms, beachfront location, and a restaurant. Some families or groups may also consider renting a house or staying in a bed and breakfast, which is offered at Casa Cook. Reservations are necessary at most hotels in Tamarindo, unless a hostel or surf camp is being considered. Prices vary depending on the time of year. High season is around the holidays and prices can almost double during this period. Low season, also known as the rainy season, is the cheapest time to visit Tamarindo. Flights, food, services, and hotels are offered at significantly lower rates.

Costa Rican Food

The choice of restaurants in Tamarindo can be overwhelming, so it’s important to know which ones are trustworthy. Las Baulas is by far the best place for pizza in town. It’s slightly hidden off of the immediate beaten path, so ask for directions. Seasons is on the fancy side (for Tamarindo) and is absolutely amazing. Dishes start at around $10 and are not typical Costa Rican foods. The chef prepares mouthwatering fish platters and unique vegetable and pasta dishes. The homemade ice cream at Seasons is also an absolute must have!

For lunch, try Gil’s burritos. They are huge, good, and fair in price. Frutas Tropicales is also a lunchtime favorite-located on the main road in Tamarindo. Order a casado or arroz con pollo.

Breakfasts are also offered at Frutas Tropicales, but the breakfasts at Jimmy’s are the best. Portions are large and cheap. The chef will gladly prepare egg whites and a custom fruit platter. Not to mention, the coffee is bottomless.

For travelers with a sweet tooth, Nogui Bar is the place to go. The pie selection is unbelievable- from banana to chocolate- there is an appealing flavor for all. The pies have a pudding like consistency and are topped with tasty whipped cream.

Tamarindo

Keep the aforementioned places in mind, and traveling experience in Tamarindo will certainly be appetizing. Tamarindo has a lot to offer, but a little pre-visit research is recommended. Unfortunately, tourists are often victims of petty theft, so no valuables should ever be left inside a rental car or on the beach.
